THE LANGUAGE FLAGSHIP INITIATIVE
The UGA Russian Flagship program is part of the National Language Flagship, a groundbreaking national initiative designed to enable American undergraduates to become global professionals and world leaders in their chosen fields.
With a network of federally funded programs in Russian, Arabic, Chinese, Farsi, Portuguese, and other strategic languages, the Language Flagship facilitates students’ development of bilingual and bicultural competencies through a combination of domestic and overseas programs. This includes not only accelerated and specialized language learning, but also experiences such as professionally oriented internships and direct enrollment in local university courses, which fully immerse students in the target language culture.
Students who complete the full Flagship program graduate with:
Superior-level language proficiency in their Flagship language of choice
Advanced cultural skills and experience living and working abroad
Intercultural insights and contacts facilitating careers in the federal government, global business, nongovernmental organizations, academia, and other fields.
UGA is one of six universities in the United States that offer a Russian Flagship program. The other institutions are Bryn Mawr College, Indiana University, Portland State University, the University of California-Los Angeles, and the University of Wisconsin, Madison. These programs work in partnership with American Councils for International Education: ACTR/ACCELS, which runs the the overseas programs.
The Language Flagship leads the nation in designing, supporting, and implementing a new paradigm for advanced language education. Through an innovative partnership among the federal government, education, and business, The Language Flagship prepares undergraduate students of all majors to take their place among the next generation of global professionals, commanding a Superior level of fluency in one of many languages critical to U.S. competitiveness and security.
The Language Flagship offers undergraduate students intensive language instruction to enhance their academic degrees through the achievement of Superior-level language proficiency and cultural competence. All programs that are part of The Language Flagship include periods of rigorous language and cultural immersion at Overseas Flagship Centers. The Language Flagship also funds a select number of K–12 programs designed to provide an articulated path of language instruction for students from elementary school through college.
